Nickel City Co-op

Nickel City Cooperative is a housing co-op in nearby Buffalo. The offical webpage is http://www.nickelcitycoop.org/. An excellent story titled One building at a time: The story of Nickel City Cooperative recently appeared in the Buffalo Spree. The final paragraph of that story should resonate well with Rochesterians and the Ant Hill Cooperative project: As every aspect of community living was detailed for me, including a handbook for dealing with conflict issues such as guests and pets, I was truly bowled over by the thoroughness of this endeavor. “We’re not just a bunch of hippies who thought it would be cool to live together,” O’Sullivan said at one point, pointing out the balance between managing the needs of everyday life with a broader agenda for a reconception of community living. Here are a group of young people who committed themselves to Buffalo by investing not only their scant personal capital, but their energy, time, and vision, taking it upon themselves to reinvent a concept of community and property in the heart of the city. For Western New Yorkers who care about revitalizing the region, we could all take a page from the Nickel City Co-op handbook. And so we have. See also: Cooperatives.

Greenlight Networks

Greenlight Networks is Rochester's homegrown fiber-optic internet provider, founded locally in 2011 and now serving over 100,000 homes and businesses. They were rated the #1 internet service provider in the country by Consumer Reports in 2024, and they consistently earn near-perfect customer satisfaction scores. Greenlight builds and owns its own fiber network street by street — no shared bandwidth, no speed degradation during peak hours, symmetrical upload and download speeds. Plans start at $55/month with no contracts, no hidden fees, and no data caps. Speeds range up to 5 Gbps for residential customers. The catch: availability is address-specific. Greenlight is expanding constantly but doesn't cover every street yet. Check greenlightnetworks.com to see if your new address is lit. If it's not, you can register to be notified when construction reaches your block. Most homes can be connected within 3–5 business days of scheduling installation. For remote workers, Greenlight's symmetrical fiber is usually the first choice when the address qualifies. Phone: (585) 351-6600 | Website: greenlightnetworks.com

Ford St and South Plymouth Ave Traffic Roundabout

The Ford St and South Plymouth Ave Traffic Roundabout is considered a "Modern Roundabout". It is located at the intersection of Ford Street and South Plymouth Avenue right when you exit the Ford Street Bridge. See the Wikipedia article for extensive information and background, including the differences between a roundabout and a traffic circle. Before even considering entering the roundabout, first and foremost, learn how to drive. Roundabout Instructions1 Step 1: Slow down when approaching the roundabout, dipstick2. Speeds of about 15 to 20 mph are recommended.3 Step 2: Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk ahead of you. Step 3: Yield to cars on your left before you enter the roundabout. Enter the roundabout once there is an adequate gap in the traffic.4 Simply make a right turn. 5 Step 4: Once in the roundabout do not stop. Continue until you get to your exit.6 Remember to use your signals.7 Step 5: Yield again to pedestrians in the crosswalk as you exit the roundabout.8 Heather's Poem: 'To the Drivers On The Roundabout' Notes and References Street View on Google - shows the actual roundabout, whereas the satellite view shows the previous intersection with a light (and a large truck waiting for it. What is a Roundabout - (See Page 7) on StreetActionItems.pdf Massachusetts has long been populated with thousands of "Rotary" interchanges and ensuing problems with out-of-state motorists who are not familiar with Rotary Rules or Etiquette. The Roads of Massachusetts website reminds drivers: "In practice, older cars in worse condition than yours, and other drivers who fail to make eye contact, always have the right of way in a rotary." 1From the city of Rochester Department of Environmental Services pamphlet, with additional comments and suggestions added in italics and footnotes by wiki users.2dipstick is a mild perjorative for a foolish or contemptible person3If you fail to do so, expect drivers in the circle to stop. This is also the case if you come to a stop with your car extending out into the roundabout beyond the dotted lines, or if you begin to roll out into the circle before traffic has passed.4Driving a truck, working a delivery job, or being intoxicated does not exclude you from need to follow this step.5Extend thumb and index finger of both hands with palms facing outward. The one that makes an "L" isn't the direction you want to go. Pull over and ask for assistance with this, if required, before approaching the traffic circle6Really though, even the best of us occasionally drive around the circle a few times before exiting, if only for novelty value.7If you don't, watch for the hand signals of others through your rearview window8However, if you've made it this far without screwing up—you're entitled to clip someone gently

Epileptic Gorilla

*As of May 2009 the Epileptic Gorilla is missing. A bizarre 10 foot statue of a gorilla stands within the compound of the Al Sigl Center. The gorilla is posing similarly to the statue of liberty holding a torch in its right hand and a tablet in its left . However the tablet is not inscribed with the date of American independence, instead it reads: Epilepsy Can affect anyone any age any time. It does not stop them from reaching their fullest potential. What is symbolized by this gorilla is not well understood. Perhaps the gorilla symbolizes a person with epilepsy and their highest potential is posing like the statue of liberty? When Epiplepsy-UNY was asked about the statue (it's outside their building), their response was: "Yes, this was done as part of a fund-raiser several years ago in connection w/ Dixon Schwabl Advertising, when many different animals were used (after the horses) as part of a campaign. The Epilepsy Foundation did some research and discovered that gorillas were very family-oriented and caring and we hired 2 artists to help us. These artists had done many of the horses the previous year, and they felt that the gorilla could hold our logo, the flame, and that dressing the gorilla in a statue of liberty would be appropriate. The animals were dressed up in many different ways. This was right after 9/11/01 I think. Anyway, so now we have a gorilla, w/ some signage on it about epilepsy and some donors listed who gave to the campaign." Look for it at latitude: 43.122722 longitude: -77.613977 (but this isn't exactly where it is - someone should get a better location) Warning: it is illegal to trespass on the active parts of this property. There are a few police people patrolling the grounds regularly.
