Kiva

Loans That Change Lives From their website http://www.kiva.org : "Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. By choosing a loan on Kiva, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the entrepreneur you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back." There are several Rochesterians involved in lending money through Kiva. One of the nice things about this company is it allows you to make a simple loan of as little as $25 and you can pool your money together with other lenders, yet you do not have to manage it, Kiva does all of the work. When the loan is repayed, you receive your money back and are free to reinvest it however you see fit. On their website you can read through the journals of the peple you have helped and see what progress they are making. They also keep track of how the loan is being repaid etc etc. Yes, it is a self serving make you feel good sort of thing, you get a personal profile page and you are linked with the person you are sending money to (if you choose) in "myspace" style, but it truly is a fantastic company making a huge impact on peoples lives empowering people to lift themselves out of poverty and make an economic impact in their villages.

Cooperatives

In an economic sense, a cooperative is a business controlled by those it affects (informally, it's stake holders). A worker cooperative is a business owned by its workers; a housing cooperative is a house owned by its residence; a retail cooperative can be worker cooperative, or a business owned by its customers, or a combination. Cooperatives eliminate control of an organisation by those who are only interested in a profit. Socially, a cooperative usually involves cooperation in the traditional sense, and a vibrant, do-it-yourself attitude towards pitching in and getting the job done. Rochester has several cooperatives of various kinds: Art Co-ops Dichotomy Rochester Genesee Center for the Arts and Education (Community Darkroom) NU MVMNT The Shoe Factory Art Co-op Consumer Food Cooperatives Abundance Cooperative Market / Genesee Co-op Natural Foodstore Genesee Valley Community Supported Agriculture Greater Rochester Urban Bounty (GRUB) Energy Cooperatives Rochester District Heating Co-op - A downtown steam co-op! Holiday Inn - Marketplace

The Holiday Inn - Marketplace (aka Holiday Inn & Suites Rochester - Marketplace) is a hotel located on the busy Jefferson Road strip in Henrietta, not far from the The Marketplace Mall. Their on-site dining is in the Marketplace Grill which offers complimentary breakfast and dinner to many hotel guests. Many other dining options are available near-by. This hotel opened in May 2007. It was formally a Ramada Inn that housed a restaurant called the Barnstormer, which was known for having a fake plane crashing into the building. The hotel was part of a recent controversy because funds and tax incentives were given to update the building by COMIDA but the owner did not use local labor for the job. COMIDA pulled the funding and incentives until the owner could prove only local labor was to be used. This set the project back a few months.

Porter Farms

Peppers in the field Jack Porter founded Porter Farms in 1956; today, it's more than 500 acres, 100 of which are in vegetables, and the whole extended family is involved. You can still find Jack running some of the farm's heavy equipment. Jack pioneered the organic side of the operation, too; the farm's first organic field was certified in 1990. The transition to organic methods was largely a matter of philosophy — a commitment to grow and distribute "wholesome, fresh, and safe food in a socially and environmentally responsible fashion." Porter Farms is a highly-diversified farm; they grow grain crops for an organic livestock feedmill in Penn Yan, as well as vegetables that are sold at local stores such as Lori's Natural Foods and The Abundance Co-op, in Rochester; The Lexington Coop, and the Feel-Rite stores on Maple Rd and Transit Rd. in Buffalo. Their Community Supported Agriculture program started with 100 members in 1996 and grew to over 500 members yearly. 2023 was the final year that Porter Farms offered their CSA, citing cost increases making the program unsustainable.

Mangia's

Roncone's is now called "Mangia Familia" or something like that. We went there and almost a half hour passed between the time we were seated and when our waitress first came over, but she was tied up with a big party in the back and it seemed like she hadn't even known that anyone was in her regular section. After we told her we had a plane to catch, the food came out extremely quickly, and it was very good. For $10 you can choose a type of pasta and a type of sauce (about 6 choices of each) and add a meatball for $1 or sausage for $2. The rest of the menu is large and varied with prices ranging from about $10 to about $21. — I thought the service was really slow and the food was only mediocre. I wouldn't go back. —

HSBC Building

The HSBC Building was constructed in 1970. Located at the intersection of Chestnut Street, Court Street, and Broad Street, it is 284 feet tall at 21 stories. The HSBC Building was originally called Marine Midland Plaza. It was built and owned by the Tishman Group of New York City. The Chicago firm of Skimore Owings and Merrill was the architect of record, with Bruce Graham and Fazlur Rahman Khan as the main designer/engineer team. Graham and Khan were also the team that designed both the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Building (Big John) in Chicago, Illinois. The exterior, a poured in place reinforced concrete system of columns and beams, is a load bearing "cage" that, combined with the concrete floor slabs and the concrete elevator core, allows the interior to be free of columns, creating flexible floor plans that can be easily changed to serve the tenants needs. The flow of gravity down the sides of the building is expressed in the undulating columns at the lower stories. Called the "arching effect," this point of visual interest shows Khan and Graham's expertise at using the engineering solutions as a major part of the building's architectural design. The design team also included no corner columns running the height of the building. This effect is best appreciated at ground level, looking straight up at a corner. The concourse includes a cafeteria, an auditorium and a sunken garden. Italian travertine (a sedimentary rock often mistakenly called a "limestone" or "marble") covers the exterior concrete structure.

Bay Street

Bay Street is a predominantly residential route that passes through three neighborhoods in northeast Rochester. From Portland Ave to North Goodman Street is Marketview Heights. Between North Goodman and Pershing Drive it forms the north-south border between Beechwood and Homestead Heights, and then Beechwood and Bensonhurst to Culver. There is a limited amount of commercial activity, mostly in the form of corner stores and auto places. There are also a number of churches. Important intersections are North Goodman Street and Webster Avenue. Bay Street improves the further east you go. For the most part it is marred by vacant lots and low income housing. The easternmost end, however, is lined with attractive, well-kept vintage homes and touches the border of Irondequoit. A couple of businesses located here: 1035 : Bay Street Auto 1055 : Bay Way Mart Not to be confused with Bay Road in Webster. See also: Rochester Hustlers
