The Massaro Sculpture Garden refers to the landscaped yard of local artist Vincent Massaro. His home is located in the Park Avenue area, on an unusual triangular plot where Harvard Street abruptly turns and meets Canterbury. Massaro created the garden 1991 after the famous ice storm deposited an extensive amount of debris on his property. Inspired, he incorporated the trash into a design. Today the garden is a balanced juxtaposition of found objects and sharply defined borders, pathways, and artistic arrangements. Whimsical and eclectic, the Massaro Sculpture Garden is a wonderful stop for anyone on a stroll through the neighborhood. ""What I am doing in my yard is not public art in that sense but rather making art in public. It is an extension of what I do inside the studio during the creative process. One plays with materials, ideas, new and old relationships, making small discoveries, observations. Being outside the scale changes, the materials change, and the object now becomes an environment, reflecting my personality and aesthetic." - Artist statement, 1992 Vincent Massaro also made the ARTWalk Cat in the nearby Neighborhood of the Arts.

Advertisement from the 1940 Rochester City Directory McCurdy's was a department store and mainstay of the Rochester downtown in its heyday. John C. McCurdy founded McCurdy's in 1901 and operated a department store at 285 East Main Street. His son, Gilbert J.C. McCurdy, later took over the business, expanded it and attracted fame by co-developing the Midtown Plaza with Maurice Forman and making McCurdy's Department Store a key player in the plaza along with B. Forman's. Gilbert McCurdy, the grandson of the founder, managed the company after his father. McCurdy sold the store to May Departments Stores in 1994, but a federal judge temporarily prohibited them from acquiring it on anti-trust grounds in November of that year. In 1995 the May Company sold the store along with three others to Bon-Ton to avoid the legal issues. See Wikipedia Article for more details. Formerly known as Irondequoit Mall, this property has been sold to a Syracuse developer, Adam Bersin, and renamed the Medley Center. A $44 million rennovation has been planned. Update, Spring 2006 One of the first rennovations completed after the change of ownership is an indoor soft playground for children. The play area is large and well-designed with comfortable seating at the perimeter for parents and guardians. It opens when the mall does, and closes about an hour before the mall. (10am - 8pm, or 11am - 5pm on Sunday.) There is a fee of $2.00 per child to use the play area, but children get a hand stamp that allows them to return through the entire day (at this point parents will likely tire of the mall's limited offerings before kids tire of the playground). An excellent antidote to severe winter weather. Past Irondequoit Mall has, for the last few years been a big, mostly dead mall in Rochester NY. There is a page on it at DeadMalls.com. I dislike shopping malls, but I think Irondequoit mall had been the perfect mall. Mostly empty, no shoppers, mostly closed storefronts. About 1/2 of the open storefronts had been community groups or hobby groups, and lots of the stores are smaller outlets with nifty stuff. Notes The new owners of Medely Center have announced chess and card-game players are no longer welcome in the Medely Center Foodcourt. Many people see this as sad since for a few years, they were the only people in the foodcourt. D&C qoutes Adam Bersin as saying Foodcount seats full of people who aren't eating don't fit with his vision of a thriving family-oriented retail center. I can only assume this means enjoying boardgames is not a faimly value. -Far These groups are allowed in the Food Court before business hours, when the mall is open to "mall walkers" as well. The reason Mr. Bersin instituted this rule was that he believed that he had to come down hard on loiterers in the mall in order to bring shoppers back. In order to make the rule fair, he stated, it must apply to everyone.

Menezes is a husband-and-wife owned pizza and sub shop in the 19th Ward on Chili Avenue just east of Thurston Road. Their menu (which includes salads), along with coupons and directions, can be found on their website. They've been in the 19th Ward since 1986. A 2003 renovation of their facade brought the shop exterior in line with the rest of that portion of Chili Avenue. You can get delivery or take out, but you can't eat in the shop as there is just enough floor space for the customers who are paying and picking up. The counter is high, but staff can assist customers in wheelchairs. All major credit cards are accepted and the owners are strong supporters of the 19th Ward Community Association. 2009 Photo, BradMandell The Mercury statue, a landmark of downtown Rochester, was created in 1881 by J. Guernsey Mitchell. Mitchell was commissioned by his brother-in-law, William Kimball, the owner of the William S. Kimball Tobacco Factory, located at the corner of Court Street and Exchange Street, to craft this statue out of riveted copper plates fabricated by the John Siddons Co located on East Main St. Once the 21 foot tall, 700 pound statue was completed, it was installed atop one of the factory smokestacks and quickly became a hallmark of the Rochester Skyline. In 1951, the factory was demolished to make way for the Rochester War Memorial. The statue was placed in storage until 1973, when it was rediscovered by John B. Allen who suggested and facilitated its re-introduction to the Rochester skyline — this time atop the Aqueduct Building, one block north of its original home. The George J. Michelsen Building is an old factory in Group 14621 that once housed one of Rochester's longest-running family businesses. Founded in the 1860s, the Michelsens manufactured furniture. The move to Avenue D, chosen for its proximity to the railroad, was part of a decentralization effort. The Michelsen company survived until 1958, when it was purchased by Mangurian's. The Michelsen Building was revived in the 2010s by the Urban League of Rochester Economic Development Corp. and Edgemere Development as workforce apartments for households earning below 60% of the median area income. The project was completed in August 2015. There are 24 one- and two-bedroom units, along with tenant storage, onsite laundry, a computer lab, onsite parking, and building security. The El Camino Trail runs adjacent to the property. The four-story building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as one of only two remaining examples of early 20th-century industrial structures in the Group 14621 neighborhood, the other being the 1912 Hickey-Freeman building two blocks east on Avenue D. Mike's Bicycle Shop was a local bicycle repair shop where the owners, both father and son, were unfortunate victims of violence. A D&C Article about what has occurred is no longer available, however a synopsis of what occurred is outlined below: Mike's Bike Shop was a little bicycle repair store operated out of a makeshift garage on the city's west side. It wasn't much, but it was an honest enterprise with one mission: giving back to the community. At the helm was an elderly man who happened to be a retired auto mechanic and was quite handy with tools. The owner sought to salvage what others saw as trash to create usable items people could enjoy. Bicycles, lawn mowers, television sets, you name it. His name was Wesley "Michael" Scott. His business was essentially a one man show, mainly kept afloat by selling bicycles to children or underprivileged families for a mere couple dollars a piece. If a customer couldn't pay, he'd give them away for free. Mike Scott was an all around selfless, god-fearing individual who was extremely proud to be giving back to his community. In addition to repairing bikes, he would also teach children how to keep their equipment safe and riding smoothly. Despite his kindhearted nature, his life was sadly filled to the brim with tragedy. Mike's son, Samuel, was murdered back in 1993, shot in the head on Smith Street in a drug deal gone bad. Samuel's girlfriend was also shot twice in the chest and neck, but survived. From what I understand, this deeply effected Mike to the core and changed his whole outlook on life. Later, Mike would survive a prostate cancer diagnosis and decided to ramp up his bicycle repair shop on Jefferson Avenue in the late 1990s. Unfortunately due to circumstance, he would become the victim of armed robbery on severe occasions. From early on, the shop was frequently burglarized. Neighborhood teens would steal bicycles, harass Mike and honestly turn a wholesome place into a hostile environment. In one incident, an intruder broke into the shop and held Mr. Scott at gunpoint, threatening to kill him just like his son, before ultimately sparing his life and only taking his wallet. These continued threats never deterred Mr. Scott from showing up to work. He operated his business rain, snow or shine, every single day. Unfortunately on September 29, 2008 an altercation occurred nearby the shop. As a result, Mike was stabbed in the back part of his shoulder. He collapsed on the vacant land next to his business, near the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Brown Street. He was rushed to the hospital by emergency services, but was pronounced dead on the table at Strong Memorial Hospital. A suspect was caught and arrested roughly two months after the homicide investigation began. I won't publish his name due to the details surrounding the case, but a (then) 21 year old city man was charged with Mike Scott's murder. Initially he denied any involvement in the murder, however a confession would come, along with claims he was only defending himself to save his own life. The details get screwy from here. During the trial, it was argued that the homicide suspect arrived at an abandoned home adjacent to Mike's Bike Shop to do some yard work for the elderly community member. Upon arrival, rather than receive work instructions from Scott, he was met with a knife and allegedly Scott attempted to force the young man to have sex with him in the vacant home. The suspect struggled with Scott and used the same knife which was initially pulled on him, to defend himself against a sexual assault. The jury accepted this claim after hearing further evidence that Scott would routinely bring sleeping bags and blankets inside the vacant property. The suspect was acquitted of Wesley "Michael" Scott's murder in July 2009. Whether or not justice was served, I have no idea, but everything about this case is deeply upsetting and it's a shame this man had to lose his life and become another victim of violence. The fact that the storefront remains in a dilapidated condition over a decade later is a testament to the state of the neighborhood. The previous address given - 7955 Exchange Boulevard, Rochester, New York 14614 is not a valid address.

Ming's Noodle on South Clinton 04-2008 Kelly Shi fluffs a pot of rice, 2005, by John Lam From the outside, Ming's looks like just another small Chinese take-out, except at dinnertime, when the kitchen hops, and aromas permeate the neighborhood, whetting a giant appetite. Once inside, Chef Ming and Chicken Wing cook food Cantonese style as tasty as anyone can in Rochester. Granted, though quite yummy and nutritious, it's not authentic Cantonese food, not even necessarily healthful food, just Cantonese-style fast food. Given his supply chain and his customers, like for most restaurants, a seasonal menu with authentic ingredients comes hard. Ming merely tries to make a living, not to educate his clientele. The menu includes plenty of noodles, either in soup or pan-fried, including soba (buckwheat) and two bean-based noodles introduced last year, but also includes Teriyaki and other specialties Ming likes to make, along with standard Cantonese-American dinner entrees. Five tables of two, combinable for larger groups, provide space for eat-in dining, and often fill up at dinnertime. They take no reservations, but rarely does waiting take long, and the take-out counter flows with steady bustle of orders. Ming's was voted "Best Chinese Restaurant" in City Newspaper's Best Of Awards in 2006.1 Note that their website was done by an outside company and then they switched away from using that outside company for deliveries. So if you go to their old website, it redirects you to Yummy Garden. The website listed above http://www.mingsnoodle.com/ is up to date.

Monks' Bread is a local Rochester region bread produced by the monks in the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard, NY, near Geneseo and Mount Morris. Monks Bread is sold at the Abbey store and in Wegmans and other outlets. It may be ordered online for nation-wide delivery, at the Monks Bread Online Store "When the monks arrived from The Abbey of Gethsemani in the spring of 1951, Br. Sylvester began baking a wholesome, old fashioned loaf of bread for the community and a few guests. Before long guests and visitors were asking to purchase this unique loaf. To respond to the demand for bread, now known as Monks' Bread, it was decided to incorporate a small bakery in the new abbey the monks were building. By the spring of 1956 things had progressed to where a large modern bakery was set in operation. Today that bakery, continually upgraded and improved, is still in operation producing several varieties of Monks' Bread including white, whole wheat, multigrain, raisin, sunflower bran and genesee rye as well as seasonal specialty breads and some other baked goods." 1 See Abbey of the Genesee for details on the Abbey, their local store and Monks' Bread. 1Abbey Website

If you're moving to Rochester from out of state, New York requires you to transfer your driver's license and vehicle registration within 30 days of establishing residency. The Monroe County Clerk's Office operates DMV services at multiple locations. You'll need: your out-of-state license, proof of identity (passport or birth certificate), proof of NY residency (utility bill, lease, bank statement), your Social Security card, and proof of insurance from a NY-approved carrier. If you're registering a vehicle, you'll also need the out-of-state title and a completed vehicle inspection from a NY-licensed station. Pro tip: Make an appointment online if possible. Walk-in waits can be long, especially at the downtown office. The suburban satellite offices (Greece, Henrietta) sometimes have shorter lines. The Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA) provides drinking water service to most of the suburban towns in Monroe County. If you're moving to a suburb like Webster, Penfield, Greece, Henrietta, or others outside the City of Rochester, your water service will likely come through MCWA. If you're moving within the City of Rochester, water is managed by the City's Bureau of Water. In both cases, you'll want to confirm who your water provider is and set up your account before or shortly after move-in. For rentals, water may be included in your lease — check with your landlord. MCWA draws water from Lake Ontario and Hemlock and Canadice Lakes in the Finger Lakes region. Rochester's water quality is consistently rated excellent. Website: mcwa.com | Phone: (585) 442-2000
