House of Guitars

The House of Guitars, located on Titus Avenue, is probably the best known business (musical instruments and CDs & records) in the Town of Irondequoit, made famous by wacky television commercials that were a staple of late-night local television in the 1980s and 1990s. Rather than a big-box retail operation, the H.O.G. consists of several buildings cobbled together in a maze-like fashion that lends a flea-market feel to excursions there. Much of their advertising features the slogan "The store that ate my brain!" and people have been known to use that phrase to refer to the business. Brothers Armand and Bruce Schaubroeck began their business in 1964 by selling guitars out of the basement of their mother's home. Global DVD

One of the benefits of living in a city famous for its Film is the local Film and movie scene. Unfortunately, for a long time that meant going out for good movies, because there were no good rental places. About a year or two before April 2005, Global DVD opened up on Monroe Ave, to fill that hole. It was not a traditional video store like Blockbuster, and more like the local used CD exchange. Tucked away (and a bit hard to spot), it was located in one of the many houses-turned-store shops on the upper end of Monroe Ave. Unassuming racks of rare and hard to find videos, and no annoyingly bright colors, or mind-dulling previews running at top volume. If you were looking for art house, foreign, obscure, cult, horror or just plain good DVD's, Global DVD wass the first place to stop. That is, after you drove by it 2 times. Unfortunately, Global DVD closed as of June 2nd, 2007.

Andrea Geer Designs

Andrea Geer Designs is the boutique and studio of local designer Andrea Geer. She specializes in hand-loomed knitwear and is a regular participant in Fashion Week of Rochester. Andrea Geer is located in the Village Gate. In her own words As an artist and designer I am fascinated by color, form and movement. I receive great enjoyment from seeing my creations as functional pieces of art. The knit fabrics move, flow and change depending on who is wearing them and how. Clothing can be a powerful statement and this body of work represents an approach to knitwear that is direct and organic. Pieces are hand loomed and manipulated to create fabrics that address and articulate my artistic goals. Yarns made from merino wool, linen and cotton are used to create clothing that enhances the beauty and individuality of the wearer. I create the buttons and pins to enhance the overall design. This step-by-step process allows me to create one of a kind as well as limited production pieces.

Their website and Facebook page is regularly updated with the new ownership and they hold events almost every day. Weekends see lots of special events for Magic, Games Workshop, Yu-Gi-Oh, or Dungeons and Dragons, depending on scheduling. They also host the Rochester Boardgame Society (RochGamers) Game Day (where people bring in board games to share and play for free) each third Saturday.
