House of Poon

House of Poon was a Chinese restaurant in Brighton with a funny name and dragons in front. It had dishes from all regions of China, which the menu explained, but mainly stayed within the boundaries of traditional American-Chinese food. It seems to have been built during the golden days when Chinese food was exotic, probably during the 50's or 60's. On December 24, 2008, the restaurant was heavily damaged by fire. Jay Leno once featured the House of Poon on The Tonight Show after someone submitted only a picture of the front of the restaurant with its name clearly visible. He featured it again during the first episode of The Jay Leno Show on September 14, 2009.

Abundance Cooperative Market

Well Stocked Shelves 11-2009 Exterior View of the Market Abundance Cooperative Market is a cooperative grocery store formally located right off Monroe Avenue in Wadsworth Square. In 2013 it was announced that Abundance Co-op was looking for a larger, more visible space, preferably in the South Wedge. They finally settled on Echo-Tone Music's old space at 571 South Avenue and moved there on April 22, 2017. It was formed by the members and shoppers of the former "Genesse Co-op Foodstore" which was located at 713 Monroe Avenue for about two decades and in many ways functioned as a co-op though legally not one. "Abundance Cooperative Market" was legally incorporated as "Genesee Coop Natural Foodstore, Inc" (a true cooperative) before a new name could be voted on, so "Abundance" is the d/b/a name. Shopping at Abundance Cooperative Abundance features a typical health/organic market layout, with a produce section, dairy, eggs, and some organic and local meat. They have an extensive and impressive bulk foods department, along with bulk shampoos, cleaning products, and oils. Boasting the cheapest tofu in town (bulk) at $1.49/pound (as of 03/12/09), they also carry a wide array of LOCAL bulk nut butters & honeys. Other local products include A Taste of Supreme pies, South Wedge Botanical Soap, and Eat Me Ice Cream. Fair Trade products are available as well. Joining the Cooperative Buying a share in the coop is currently $100 and gives you full membership privileges, including participation in the decision-making process—including the direction of the store's future, plus occasional discounts and specials. Most importantly though, you get to be a part of Rochester's only cooperatively owned food store! Additionally, as a member, you have the option of working in the store each week or a couple times a month in exchange for a monthly discount at the register. Call the store for more details. The small "cafe" section features free wireless access. There is coffee and pre-made deli items to-go, or to eat in the cafe.

Genesee Valley Regional Market

The Genesee Valley Regional Market has been operated since 1951 by the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority (GVRMA) as a regional food distribution center for nine counties in central and western New York. While at one time it had a "farmer's market" character, in recent years the food operations are more commercial production and distribution operations with over 150 site tenants. There is still some retail character, including several restaurants, but there are now a wide variety of non-food commercial operations in "the Market" as well. 900 Jefferson Road Market Includes the following RocWiki listed entities: Acadia Canna & Kratom ARK Glass & Glazing Blue Toad Hard Cider Cheesy Eddie's Donna Marie's Gluten Free Bakery Genesee Stamp & Stationery Innovative Restaurant Supply JBC Rice Noodles and Ramen Lee's Oriental Food Lori's Natural Foods MJ Dispensary Mountain Roads Brewing Company Nathan's Soup & Salad Niblack Foods Palmer's Meat & Seafood Market Rick's Barber Shop Rochester Appliance Sodam Korean Restaurant Susan Plunkett's Fabulous Foods Union Place Coffee Roasters Wagner Carpets Wagner Training Center Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority (GVRMA) The GVRMA was founded to create a regional distribution center and market to support agricultural suppliers in a nine county area. GVRMA was granted a 120+ acres of land for its use. Over the years the authority began leasing land and buildings on the parcel and using the proceeds to fund the activities of the authority. What can be very surprising is that some of GVRMA's tenants include Chase Bank, Holiday Inn, Office Depot, Best Western, Verizon, RG&E, etc. See their Land Lease page to find that the following commercial/retail strips are all income producing properties of the authority: from 137 to 175 Clay Road, from 1455 to 1663 East Henrietta Road, from 800 to 1000 Jefferson Road (both sides), and from 35 to 218 Mushroom Blvd (both sides)

Brio

Located in Pittsford Colony Plaza, Brio billed itself as a Mediterranean Bistro, though perhaps "Mediterranean-Italian" is more descriptive. The usual range of pasta and pizza was offered, but, for example, the traditional tomato marinara is supplanted with use of lighter sauces emphasizing lemon and garlic, and olives are used liberally. Brio made their own pasta. Outdoor seating was available in the warm months, and live entertainment was occasionally offered on weekends. Otherwise, there's a lot of Sinatra played in the background. On slow nights, servers occasionally let children observe the cooks in the kitchen, and give them little paper chef hats to wear. In 2011 the named was changed and became a second location of the Pomodoro Grill and Wine Bar 7/14/08-Rochester Business Journal reports that Brio owner Sam Mina has a suit against him to force him to change the restaurant's name or settle for "least $10 million in damages for alleged trademark infringement, court records state"
